The Hermitage

Sitting Buddha Hermitage is run as a Registered Charity called Field of Merit, which was set up in 2013 with the following aim:

Field of Merit plans to offer to practitioners of the Soto Zen school of Buddhism the opportunity to do solitary retreat in individual hermitages in a quiet rural location with the practical support and spiritual guidance of a small resident community.

The Hermitage is presently occupying a rented property in the village of Cromford, near Matlock in Derbyshire, not far from the Peak District National Park. Rev. Alicia, as resident monk, offers an introduction to meditation on Saturday afternoons, weekly meditation evenings, day retreats, and solitary retreat accommodation in a one-bedroom annexe.

Through these activities we hope to gather enough support to enable the Hermitage to eventually move to a property in open countryside, with a few acres of land, a 2- or 3-bedroom house and outbuildings that can be converted into hermitages, or the potential to site cabins or similar structures to serve as hermitages, providing the opportunity for people to take time out from often very busy lives, to be in a quiet and natural environment, to meditate, contemplate and reflect and deepen their religious practice.
